Loy Krathong: Thai Water Festival

Date: Saturday 15 November
Time: 2.30pm - Sunset
Venue: Parramatta Riverbank
Cost: Free event

One of Sydneys most magical events, Loy Krathong will transform the Parramatta Riverbank into an exotic mix of Thai culture throughout the afternoon. Traditional dance, musical performances, Tae Kwondo and fruit carving demonstrations will entertain everyone from 4pm.

Come along and join in the krathong making workshops and make your own krathong to float on the river. Loy Krathong has an important meaning for the Thai community. Loy means to float and krathong means a lotus shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The krathong contains a candle, incense stick and flowers and is floated as an offering to the Goddess of Water.

At sunset, a magical procession will make its way along the riverbank accompanied by Thai drummers dressed in traditional costumes. Join in and float your krathong and make a wish for the future. By moonlight, hundreds of krathongs will light up the river creating a spectacular and striking scene which will lead into the spectacular evening performance on the river.

  • The whole family will enjoy this feast for the senses.
  • With performances, Beauty Queens, handcrafts, food stalls, Trakraw
  • Martial Arts demonstrations.
  • Make your own krathong (floating candle) and participate in the serene Loy Krathong ritual of floating candles on the river at dusk.
